Exciting Academic Developments at Tahlequah High School This Fall

As the new academic year kicks off, Tahlequah High School is buzzing with a variety of exciting academic activities and initiatives designed to enhance student learning and engagement. From innovative Advance Placement course offerings, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics classes, Concurrent enrollment at Northeastern State University, Indian Capital Technology Center program enrollments, and our internship and work-study programs, the fall semester promises to be a dynamic period for both students and faculty.

STEM Initiatives and Competitions

One of the highlights this fall is the expansion of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program. Tahlequah High School has introduced new courses in robotics, aviation, computer science, and film, aimed at equipping students with the skills needed for the future job market. The school’s robotics team is gearing up for several competitions, where they will showcase their engineering prowess and problem-solving abilities.

Additionally, the science department is working collaboratively with other schools in Oklahoma to develop rigorous academic standards that will prepare our students for all of their future endeavors. Our science laboratory is the best in the county, and our teaching staff works hard to provide innovative and wonderful learning lab opportunities for all our THS students. Students dissect sharks, grasshoppers, fetal pigs, and many more awesome species to develop and inspire future doctors and scientists.

Enhanced Language Arts Curriculum

The Language Arts department is also seeing significant enhancements this fall. With the addition of new and invigorated curriculum last year, our English teachers are preparing our students for the college and career pathways with rigorous lessons daily. A new creative writing course has been introduced, encouraging students to explore their literary talents. The course includes workshops with local authors and poets, providing students with valuable feedback and inspiration.

Moreover, we are now offering an English Composition I class through NSU with one of our own high school faculty members, Mr. Robert Pinion as the teacher. Students have the comfort and help from their high school teacher and the high expectations of a college course right here on our campus. This class is encouraging, and we expect to see it continue in the Spring semester. The school library has also been updated with a range of new books and resources, thanks to our Innovative Literacy grant and a loving librarian, Mrs. Jordan which supports the enhanced curriculum and encourages a love for reading among students.

Focus on Mental Health and Well-being

Recognizing the importance of mental health, Tahlequah High School has implemented several initiatives to support student well-being. The school has partnered CREOKS counseling services to provide free counseling services. THS also boasts a calming area in two specific locations on campus. These initiatives aim to equip students with the tools they need to manage stress and maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal life.

In addition, the school is promoting mindfulness and wellness through various activities and the Tahlequah Minds Matter student organization. TMM promotes activities designed to help students develop coping strategies and improve their overall well-being.

Community Engagement and Service Learning

Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the educational experience at Tahlequah High School. This fall, Student Council, Leadership, and National Honor Society students will have numerous opportunities to participate in service-learning projects. These projects not only benefit the community but also help students develop a sense of responsibility and empathy.

One notable project is the partnership with local environmental organizations to clean up nearby parks and rivers. Students will also be involved in tutoring programs, providing academic support to younger students in the district. These initiatives foster a sense of community and highlight the importance of giving back.

Extracurricular Activities and Clubs

Extracurricular activities continue to play a vital role in student life at Tahlequah High School. This fall, the school is offering a wide range of clubs and organizations for students to join. Please let your student know that THS will host a CLUB DAY on September 25 during both lunches at THS. This will give all our students a chance to get involved and find a place at THS. From the art club to the chess club, there is something for everyone.

The school’s academic team is also preparing for a series of competitions, where they will test their knowledge against other schools in the region. These activities provide students with opportunities to pursue their interests and develop new skills outside the classroom. Mrs. Chelsea Greenfield is our team coach, and she is looking forward to this season with lots of hope for success as she has an awesome and dedicated group of students on her team this year.

Conclusion

With a focus on innovation, well-being, and community engagement, Tahlequah High School is set for an exciting and productive fall semester. The various academic initiatives and events not only enhance the learning experience but also prepare students for future success. As the school year progresses, students and faculty alike are looking forward to a semester filled with growth, discovery, and achievement.
