Special Olympics
Tahlequah Public Schools has the one of the finest Special Athlete Programs in Oklahoma! We have 100% support from our student body, faculty, staff, our school district, and the city of Tahlequah. We are totally self sufficient in fundraising and each year are able to provide three days clothing, food, and lodging for twenty-five to thirty students. When we travel to state games it is like moving a little city.
Everyone knows how participation in a sport or activity nurtures a sense of family. It is no different in Special Olympics. We have become one big, happy family! Each athlete urges others to do their best and be happy in their performance. Remember, our athletes start in the 3rd grade and participate with us through the 12th grade. So in essence, they grow up together just like brothers and sisters. When May rolls around and the state meet date grows close, excitement builds, bags are packed weeks in advance, roommates are picked, and all (coaches included) look forward to the competition as well as food, fellowship and fun during our three day trip to Stillwater.
If you can imagine an athletic competition where everyone has the opportunity to perform and excel to the best of their ability, this is the place! If ever there was a show of courage and appreciation of support, this is where you see it! Special Olympics is like no other experience – everyone cheers for each athlete and it is one of the few sports where even your competitor wants you to win!
